The extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, October 1944: Hungarian prisoner Saul Ausländer (Géza Röhrig) is forced to join a Sonderkommando — a group of Jewish inmates — which includes Abraham Warszawski (Levente Molnár), Feigenbaum (Marcin Czarnik), Mietek (Kamil Dobrowolski), and Oberkapo Biederman (Urs Rechn). Isolated from the rest of the camp, Saul is given a task that couldn’t be more horrific: he must assist in the mass extermination of prisoners and burn the piles of bodies in the crematoria, becoming part of a system overseen by SS officers like Voss (Uwe Lauer) and Busch (Christian Harting).

Saul finds a sense of moral redemption in the face of the unimaginable when he discovers the body of a young boy and decides not to consign it to the flames. Instead, he treats the boy as if he were his own son. As the Sonderkommando begins to plan a rebellion, Saul undertakes the impossible: he wants to secretly deliver the child’s body to a rabbi and give him a proper burial — a final act of human dignity.
