Sleep With Your Eyes Open
A coastal metropolis in Brazil. Kai arrives heartbroken from Taiwan, hoping for a relaxing vacation. A broken air conditioner leads her to Fu Ang’s umbrella shop. He could become a friend, but the rainy season fails to arrive, and his shop disappears. While searching for Fu Ang, Kai uncovers the story of Xiaoxin and a group of Chinese workers in a luxurious skyscraper. Imported products made in China collide with problems involving wealthy white neighbors. In Xiaoxin’s tale, Kai strangely sees a reflection of herself.
Main characters come and go unexpectedly in this quiet comedy of misunderstandings, portrayed by both amateurs and professional actors. From one foreign city to the next, they follow the necessities of work more than any classical plot structure. But over the course of a hot, slow summer, delicate connections begin to form between them—like islands in a sea full of sharks.
