Six et demi, onze
A major work by Jean Epstein. The title Six et demi, onze refers to the size of a Kodak photograph that plays a key role in the story. Two brothers are separated when the younger one falls in love with a singer and commits suicide. When the older brother investigates, he discovers the bitterly ironic truth while developing Kodak negatives. Epstein's handling of movement – not in space, but in time, as the events unfold in retrospect – is masterful and as far ahead of its time as the reflexive energy he directs at his own material, the film strip.
