A major work by Jean Epstein. The title Six et demi, onze refers to the size of a Kodak photograph that plays a key role in the story. Two brothers are separated when the younger one falls in love with a singer and commits suicide. When the older brother investigates, he discovers the bitterly ironic truth while developing Kodak negatives. Epstein's handling of movement – not in space, but in time, as the events unfold in retrospect – is masterful and as far ahead of its time as the reflexive energy he directs at his own material, the film strip. (C.H.) Henri Langlois was enthusiastic about the modernity of this film, which opens the second wave in Epstein's work, in search of ‘a “photogenic” quality that no longer unfolds in space, but in time.’
