After the curtain falls and the applause dies down, John ‘Divine G’ Whitfield returns to his cell in Sing Sing maximum security prison. Here he is serving a long prison sentence for a murder he did not commit. Prison theatre is his only ray of hope in a monotonous prison life marked by quiet despair. Alone on stage, John manages to transport himself for a moment to a place far away from the high walls. When the unpredictable Clarence ‘Divine Eye’ Maclin joins the theatre programme, the group's creative routine is thrown off balance - because the newcomer insists on staging a comedy.

Greg Kwedar's gripping drama about the liberating power of art to bring hope to even the darkest places is based on true events in one of the oldest prisons in the USA. In the lead role, Colman Domingo delivers an outstanding performance alongside numerous former inmates who lend the film an impressive authenticity.
