History lesson about desecrated charity: In February 1934, Sidonie, a parentless Roma baby, is taken into care by the Breitner family, a working-class family living in modest circumstances. Under their protection, the girl survives until March 1943, when she is snatched from her foster parents by the Nazi bureaucracy and murdered in Auschwitz concentration camp. Karin Brandauer's version immortalises the authentic case for the nation's cinematic memory. The ending is foreshadowed at the beginning: the lives of father and child intersect. After that, the screenplay, which won the Grand Prix Genève-Europe, unfolds in elliptical sequences to paint a poignant picture of the lives of working-class families under the yoke of fascist dictatorships. This film should be used as teaching material in all schools.
