‘If you're looking for a rainbow
You know there's gonna be some rain
One minute you're filled with happiness
Next minute there's nothing but pain’
Prisoner Of Life (End Credits Song)

Whether in Raymond Carver's short stories, in this film based on them or in reality: Los Angeles is a place that always seems to be on the brink of the apocalypse or already in the midst of it - and whose inhabitants try to live their everyday lives around it. This works best when their own minor and major dramas are drowned in alcohol, shagged aside or celebrated into the ground.

This may sound dull and predictable, but in Altman's hands the 22 main characters(!) are interwoven so effortlessly and entertainingly that even after just over three hours you wish you could stay a little longer in the lives of those you wanted to leave the cinema moments before.
