Short: BETWEEN HEATHEN AND EARTH + FAMILY ALBUM
FAMILY ALBUM
This accessible, valuable and highly topical documentary follows London-based photographer Samara Pearce as she travels to the Kharkiv region of Ukraine, placing the current atrocities in their proper, harrowing historical context. Here she documents the ongoing, devastating effects of the Russian invasion of 2022 on the region and its inhabitants. Pearce was almost literally born for the job: she is the great-granddaughter of Alexander Wienerberger, famous for his photographs of the Holodomor - the USSR-induced famine in Soviet Ukraine in the early 1930s that killed several million people. The dark echo of history thus becomes a tribute to resistance and resilience.
BETWEEN HEAVEN AND EARTH (BEJN IS-SEMA U L-ART)
In the annals of the soulful Maltese folk song tradition known as għana, Frans Baldacchino had carved out a lasting place for himself long before his untimely death at the age of 63 in 2006. Baldacchino, who was nicknamed ‘Il Budaj’, was also a poet and an artist - important facets of his life that are duly recognised in this loving tribute. In this short documentary film, anthropologist and artist Camilleri interviews Baldacchino's collaborators, family and friends to find out why he was so important to the Maltese cultural landscape.
