In his masterpiece Sherlock Jr., the great silent film comedian Buster Keaton plays a projectionist who falls asleep and enters the movie in progress, where, as a master detective, he convicts the rival whom he initially seemed inferior to in the dreary reality. Keaton's ingenious cascade of “impossible gags” and technically virtuoso ideas continues to amaze (and make audiences laugh): As a dream play, Sherlock Jr. essentially anticipates everything that cinema will have to offer on this subject over the next hundred years. To open the series, there is a dreamy, cheerful short film program with early rarities and a stroke of animation genius from the Looney Tunes forge. (C.H.)
