Shambhala
Pregnant Pema lives with her three husbands in the highest settlement in the world in the Nepalese Himalayas. It is one of the last places where the old tradition of polyandry still exists. When her first husband Tashi disappears on the trade route to Lhasa and the rumour spreads that Pema's child is by a strange man, her young happiness seems to be in danger. Together with her second husband, the monk Karma, Pema sets off into the ruthless wilderness in search of her beloved Tashi. Their journey leads to spiritual self-discovery and liberation, where Pema's true destiny awaits: Shambhala. Will she find the ancient kingdom where, according to legend, man and nature are in harmony with the spirit?
This is the first Nepalese film to screen in the Berlinale Competition: Director Min Bahadur Bham masterfully blends tradition and modernity in SHAMBHALA, bringing an unknown culture and the impressive Himalayan landscape to the screen. At the same time, he presents Pema as an unmistakable, strong and modern female protagonist.
