SEEDS
Brittany Shyne's feature film debut follows black farmers in the southern states of the USA. Her sensitive portrait in shades of grey shows their everyday lives in a way that is as poetic as it is informative: although the farmers now have modern means of production that help them harvest cotton, potatoes and pecans, the work is still hard. All the more so because they have to fight for subsidies, against institutionalised racism and thus for their future. While black farmers still owned around 16 million hectares of land in 1910, today it is only a fraction of that.
