Scrubbers
Annetta (Chrissie Cotterill) and Carol (Amanda York) manage to escape from an open juvenile detention centre. While Annetta wants to see her young daughter, who is being raised in a convent, Carol plans to get herself arrested again so that she can be sent to the closed juvenile detention centre where her lover Doreen (Debby Bishop) is imprisoned. Stylish and with a touch of bitter irony, Scrubbers, Mai Zetterling's only British film as a director, offers insights into the isolated world of a prison. In addition to the violence, hopelessness and fragility of the relationships between the inmates, which are based on love, lust and fear, the film nevertheless shows the unique bond between the women, who, with the help of their crude humour, try again and again to endure their desperate lives behind bars.
