Motto: ‘Being able to laugh at your own mistakes is the greatest virtue of civilised mankind.’ The story of the minor civil servant Aldo Piscitello, who is forced by his superior to join the party during the Mussolini era, which Aldo's anti-fascist friends take surprisingly calmly. Aldo's family is all the more enthusiastic: his wife even has his joining the party backdated to 1921 because there is a money bonus for it - when the Allies invade, the inconspicuous follower is suddenly seen as a dangerous subject, while the real fascists come to terms (at his expense). With Anni difficili, Luigi Zampa created a central forerunner of the Commedia all'italiana, which produced many such satirical confrontations with the fascist past in the 1960s - Zampa's successful pioneering work still caused a stir (from all political sides) in 1948: ‘an insult to national honour’.
