Sauna
Johan drifts through life, fitting perfectly into Copenhagen's gay scene with its bars, parties and one-night stands. He spends a lot of time at Adonis, the city's only gay sauna, where he not only recently started working, but also shares casual sexual encounters with visitors. Despite everything, Johan still longs for intimacy – and finds it with William, a sensitive trans man. However, he quickly realises that not everyone at Adonis is happy that he has fallen in love with someone they do not consider part of their male community.
Not fit, not white, not masculine enough for Adonis? Mathias Broe's debut SAUNA is a lustful film about men who love men – and at the same time takes issue with a discriminatory gay dating culture. Broe skilfully navigates the relationship between his main characters, which is characterised by lust and curiosity. But also by social expectations that constantly put pressure on Johan and William. ‘Sauna’ is sensitive, sexy and a celebration of the intimate connections that arise when people free themselves from the gaze of others.
