Since his childhood, Wojciech Has has admired the stories and paintings of the artist Bruno Schulz, who was shot by the Nazis in the ghetto in 1942 and to whom he pays homage in this film. Józef wants to visit his seriously ill father in the sanatorium. Easier said than done, as the way there proves to be an increasingly surreal, Kafkaesque labyrinth in which the laws of space and time are suspended: His father, who is actually dead, is still alive and Józef is able to travel back into his own past in this wonderland. What he finds in his memories is intertwined with contemporary Polish history between melancholy, hopelessness and destruction. A favourite film of Luis Buñuel and Ingmar Bergman, who awarded it the Jury Prize in Cannes. (Florian Widegger)
