Sally!
Hardly anyone who lived through the 1980s missed reading Sally Miller Gearhart’s radical feminist, separatist science fiction stories *The Wanderground: Stories of the Hill Women*! In the 1970s, she co-founded one of the first Women’s Studies programs at San Francisco State University and was one of the first openly lesbian professors. As an activist, she worked alongside Harvey Milk in California, successfully fighting for the right of lesbians and gay men to continue teaching in public schools. Yet, Sally Gearhart seems almost forgotten today. The documentary *SALLY!* retraces the life of this lesbian icon through the stories of the women who lived, loved, and fought by her side. It’s lesbian herstory that brings us images of lesbian life in the 1970s and 1980s, and a pure joy to behold. After all, when was the last time you saw a bunch of lesbians chopping wood shirtless?
