Salaam Bombay!
Left behind by the circus, Krishna (Shafiq Syed) sets off for Bombay (Mumbai). There, he courageously tries to earn money for the journey home to his village among drug dealers, pimps, and prostitutes. But he can neither read nor write and does not know exactly where his village is or what it is called. So he sinks inexorably into the pulsating everyday life of the children who populate the streets of the Indian metropolis. With her feature film debut, Mira Nair has created a moving documentary work in the tradition of De Sica or Ray, for which she invited street children on location to become actors in their own story with uncompromising realism. A moving ode to childhood and a valuable contribution to what is arguably the most important dimension of cinema: becoming a seismograph of human life. (T.W.)
