ROSENCRANTZ & GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern wander through the events of Hamlet without ever really understanding what is happening around them. They are summoned, sent away, summoned again, and their conversations meander between philosophical musings and absurd wordplay. While the great tragedy unfolds in the background, the two try to find some kind of meaning. In the plot, in their roles, in the world itself.
The further the film progresses, the clearer it becomes that the two characters are trapped in a story whose rules they do not know and whose outcome has long been decided. Their attempts to understand the logic of events repeatedly fail because they are minor characters, marginal figures in someone else's drama. This existential comedy lends the film a quiet melancholy that is constantly noticeable beneath the humor.
