Repulsion
The keywords England, horror, and the 1960s usually conjure up images of Gothic horror from Hammer Studios. But it's a young Polish director with a penchant for the surreal who proves what's possible in this genre. The story of a young woman haunted by terrifying visions (of men!) and sinking deeper and deeper into a state of lethargy and delusion is not only incredibly modern but also disturbingly staged. With simple yet sophisticated technical tricks and meticulous sound design, REPULSION conveys the psychological distress of its protagonist. Also a novelty at the time: the banality of everyday life as a constant backdrop of dread.
