Re-Animator
1985 was a strong year for the undead. George A. Romero completed the first zombie trilogy with Day of the Dead, while the fruits of his labour rivalled him at the box office with The Return of the Living Dead. Stuart Gordon expanded the subgenre with Re-Animator, a comical and iconic hybrid of Lovecraft adaptation, Frankenstein story and modern zombie film. The ‘Mad Scientist’ Herbert West (fantastic: Jeffrey Combs) in Re-Animator has also succeeded in creating a mixture: a neon-green serum that brings dead tissue back to life. It's just a shame that the undead react aggressively to their surroundings. What begins with a cat corpse in the fridge - much to the displeasure of owner Megan Halsay (Barbara Crampton) and her boyfriend Dan Cain (Bruce Abbott) - ends in a veritable gore-fest. Re-Animator was the starting signal for the fruitful collaboration of a team around Gordon, which immediately set the next genre milestone with From Beyond (1986). (Julian Stockinger)
