In the 1950s, quiz shows in the USA achieved ratings of up to 85 per cent – the beginning of a development in which intangible knowledge competitions transformed into ‘Trivial Pursuit’ contests for exorbitant cash prizes, culminating in today's disgusting competitions in jungle shows. ‘Television is public trust,’ said the president of NBC in the context of the scandal surrounding the Twenty-One show, which led to an early breach of trust with the television audience. The show's sponsor (Martin Scorsese) was blunt: ‘The audience did not tune in to watch the amazing display or the intellectual ability. They just wanted to watch the money.’ The incident involving rigged contestants led to the Television Quiz Show Act of 1958, which banned sponsor-dominated programmes in primetime. (G.S.)
