Quest

FromJonathan Olshefski

Year2017

Duration105min.

A presidential election is due in the USA in 2008. The Democratic candidate is Barack Obama. Jonathan Olshefski's documentary film will ultimately cover his entire term of office, but the focus is on another black US family. Olshefski originally comes into contact with the Raineys in North Philadelphia because of a photography project. Nine years later, he distils a very intimate insight into the family's everyday life from around 300 hours of video footage. They have learnt to live with the harsh reality of the lower income bracket. But the rampant gun violence and its literally far-reaching effects threaten to tear apart even this highly resilient community - and the special bond between father Quest and daughter PJ. "We have to be our role models!" shouts one during a protest under the slogan "Philadelphia Ceasefire. Stop Shooting People". The Raineys have long been committed to this cause.
