🎬 About the Film

SATURDAY CHURCH • Dir. Damon Cardasis • USA 2018 • 82 min • OmdU

Ulysses is 14, lives in the Bronx, and has just lost his father. Because he’s shy and not as “masculine” as his classmates, he’s relentlessly bullied at school. More and more, he escapes into daydreams that transform his bleak reality into a radiant musical.

At home, his strict and religious Aunt Rose takes care of him and his younger brother Abe while their mother works. But when Rose discovers that Ulysses has secretly been trying on high heels and nylons, she throws him out in a fit of rage. Ulysses finds refuge at “Saturday Church”, a community of queer youth and transgender sex workers who meet weekly in a nearby church — a place where, at last, he can be who he truly is.
