Queer Exile Berlin
### Queer People from Around the World Have Made Berlin What It Is Today
Many leave their homelands—some by choice, others out of necessity. The queer universe of Berlin, a city in constant flux, mirrors the movements of the world. Over the past decades, the spectrum of identities has expanded. Today, "gay" and "lesbian" are just two terms among many.
The documentary follows six people from diverse backgrounds and identities who have chosen Berlin as their city, living their identities openly and engaging in political activism. Their current political struggles and discussions are relevant to both hetero and queer communities worldwide. The film interweaves the personal stories and ambitions of its queer protagonists with historical events and contemporary issues. The result is a portrait of Berlin as both an eternal place of longing and a challenge for those who find themselves there.

Andreas Brunner, historian and co-director of QWien – Center for Queer Culture and History, speaks about the flight of queer people from Nazi Austria and the challenges of researching this field. Using the example of Erica Anderson (1914–1976), a photographer and filmmaker born as Erika Kellner in Vienna, he reconstructs her story and queer networks in exile. Anderson, supported by a network of lesbian friends that included Swiss writer Annemarie Schwarzenbach, managed to flee. After a marriage of convenience in England, she emigrated to the United States, where she once again collaborated with queer friends and artists as a documentary filmmaker.
