Queerness continues to be heavily suppressed in Malaysia, with queer realities rarely represented in mainstream media. With QUEER AS PUNK, director Yihwen Chen gives a voice to a community that resists through art, music and joie de vivre. The work explores the tension between queerness and punk as a powerful counter-movement to the religious-conservative status quo. Celebrating chosen families and queer joy becomes an act of rebellion – and shows how even small gestures become political when one's own existence is threatened. With poignant and courageous songs such as ‘Lonely Lesbian’ and ‘Horny & Broke,’ QUEER AS PUNK tells of personal and collective experiences – of transition and self-empowerment and solidarity within the community.
