In the early 1950s, singer Tonia tours the country with her fellow musicians. After a night of drinking, she wakes up one morning in prison. The secret police are after her. The officers are trying to obtain incriminating information from her about an acquaintance and do not shy away from brutal physical and psychological methods of torture. A months-long, torturous interrogation begins, unleashing undreamt-of powers of resistance in Tonia ... Banished to the poison cabinet for years as ‘anti-communist’, Bugajski's film first circulated as an underground phenomenon on VHS before it was approved for public screening in 1989. The furious reckoning with Stalinist tyranny becomes a universally valid, rousing manifesto against terror and despotism. (Florian Widegger)
