Programm Nora Sweeney
All films: Nora Sweeney, 16mm, English or English subtitles
Nora Sweeney, an American filmmaker and teacher, portrays both people and places in her films, seeking out the poetry in everyday life. In her latest work, The Concrete River, she explores the terrain along the Los Angeles River as a public space used by people in a variety of ways. In her earlier works, she also focuses on the connection between people and (urban) landscapes, observing a group of seniors who spend their days in a park (Birds of a Feather) or accompanying migrant workers as they go about their daily work in an orange grove (Sweet Oranges). Sweeney shoots on 16mm film, exploring the world with the artistic possibilities of analog material. Conversations and sounds are not synchronized with the image, but form collage-like soundtracks that are closer to the associative than the informative. In this way, Sweeney gets very close to her protagonists, for example when she portrays a pair of brothers (Fausto and Emilio) who, even in their old age, continue to work as hairdressers in their own salon.
