In rural England in the early 19th century, the five well-bred daughters of the British upper-class Bennet family are waiting for a respectable gentleman to ask for their hand in marriage. At least that is the speculation of mother Bennet, who intends to marry her daughters regardless of the consequences. However, she has not reckoned with the stubbornness of Elizabeth, the second eldest, who is not at all keen on the wealthy Mr Darcy.

Jane Austen's novel, on which the film is based, celebrates its 212th birthday on 28 January.
