Kiril, a young monk, hides an Albanian girl who is running away from her relatives. The London photo editor Anne becomes the victim of a gunman. Her lover, war photographer Aleksandar, decides to return to his Macedonian homeland. But even there he cannot escape the war, the traces of which are visible even in the small village. "Against the backdrop of the devastating civil war in his former homeland, Milčo Mančevski tells three stories in his directorial debut - about the impossibility of love, about the moral dilemma of having to make personal decisions and about the difficulties of returning home." (Max Alexander) In 1994, this visually ambitious triptych against war, which reflects the grief over the failure of human relationships, was honoured with the Golden Lion in Venice.
