Powaqqatsi

FromGodfrey Reggio

Year1988

Duration96min.

Powaqqatsi is the second part of Reggio's Qatsi trilogy. The term from the Hopi language can mean ‘life in transformation’, as in the subtitle, but can also refer to parasitic life. In this dichotomy of development, he shows populations in Africa, Asia and Latin America as well as industrialisation. As a cinematic realisation of a New Age holism, in which everything is connected to everything else, it already predicted the empty flood of images from TikTok and Co. in 1988. Arranged to a composition by Philipp Glass, Reggio's world view raises questions of exoticisation today.
