Pillow Talk
Measured against the prudishness of Hollywood in the 1950s, PILLOW TALK is surprisingly open about the sexuality of its female character: Doris Day, the girl next door, transforms herself into a sex symbol, while the stereotypical man is ridiculed. As unimaginable as the conflict over the shared use of a telephone line by an interior designer and a composer seems from today's perspective, the change in gender roles appears timeless and is dealt with in an enormously amusing way. The unbeatable chemistry between Day and Hudson, the pointed colour dramaturgy and the numerous visual punchlines make the film a model for modern rom-coms – after all, the legendary split-screen number in the bedroom works just as well today, even if the phones are different.
