Pierre Boulez. Notations
The film centres on the voice of Pierre Boulez (1925–2016). In conversation with journalist Claude Glayman, Boulez recalls formative encounters and intellectual companions such as John Cage, Ann-Sophie Mutter and Luigi Nono. The composer's voice is accompanied by images that have accompanied him for decades – the photographs of Marion Kalter. The cinematic narrative is complemented by musical excerpts: Boulez's ‘Douze notations pour piano’ (1945), recorded by the composer himself for ORF in 1992, forms the sonic foundation.
Notations is a dense web of memories and a cinematic document about Pierre Boulez, but also about the art of approximation – in words, music and images.
