Picnic
America in the 1950s: The sun is shining, houses and gardens are spruced up, it's a public holiday. Hal, a drifter, returns to this small-town idyll. His mate Alan offers him a job and stable living conditions. On this day, he also meets Alan's fiancée Madge, and the two become close at an evening picnic ... Beneath the puritanical surface, things are bubbling over, and some interpersonal relationships are as torn as William Holden's torn shirt, which is brought into glorious cinemascope at every opportunity and whose character is a projection screen for the hidden fears and desires of others. The Eisenhower era comes to life in all its beautiful cruelty: An Americana jewel that should definitely be rediscovered! (Florian Widegger)
