Montreal-based filmmaker and animator Theodore Ushev, whose short film Blind Vaysha (2016) was nominated for an Oscar, brings Vladislav Todorov's dystopian science fiction novel The Spinning Top to the screen as a truly visionary experience. Building on Todorov's own screenplay, feature film debutant and director Ushev uses a remarkable range of visual techniques to tell the story of posthuman, asexual immortals who set out to colonise the galaxy. The film displays "an originality bordering on virtuosity" (according to Guillaume Massie-Hamel of Le Petit Septième) and introduces the magnificent Martina Apostolova as the ethereal but combative Gargara, a being with mystical healing powers. Intellectually stimulating and sensually immersive, it is a journey beyond our wildest imagination.
