Peter Greenaway: Drowning by Numbers
Three women named Cissie Colpitts—grandmother, mother, and daughter—drown their husbands one after another and are repeatedly protected by the local coroner, Madgett, who each time rules out murder in the hope of being rewarded with love.
Meanwhile, Madgett’s son Smut occupies himself by numbering and cataloguing animal carcasses he comes across. He is constantly accompanied by his rope-skipping girlfriend, who recites the names of one hundred fixed stars while jumping.
Suspicious friends and relatives of the deceased band together in an attempt to prove the women’s crimes.
