Peter Greenaway: A Zed & Two Noughts
The brothers Oswald and Oliver Deuce are zoologists who study animal behavior. One day, both of their wives are killed in a car accident caused by a swan. The driver of the car, a friend of the women named Alba Benwick, survives but loses a leg in the crash. At first, Oswald and Oliver blame her, but they later grow closer, eventually each beginning a romantic relationship with her.
Their grief develops into an obsession with decay. Through documentaries about the origins of the world, the brothers attempt to understand life on Earth. Eventually, they begin making time-lapse films to depict the process of decomposition—starting with an apple and then progressing to increasingly large animals from the zoo. Surrounding the brothers and Alba is a cast of eccentric, often unsettling characters.
The film features footage taken from nature documentaries by David Attenborough, who is also heard as the narrator.
