Persepolis

FromMarjane Satrapi, Vincent Paronnaud

Year2007

Duration95min.

Based on the comic books of the same name, Iranian-born Marjane Satrapi tells her autofictional life story. It is about her homeland, the difficulties of growing up and the clash of different cultures. An unconventional film adaptation of a contemporary comic that gains significance through its spatial and thematic depth.

Marjane is eight years old when the mullahs drive the Shah out of Persia and take power. The world is suddenly a different place, but the rebellious girl has no intention of submitting to the new strict rules. She would much rather discover punk, ABBA, Iron Maiden and, of course, boys. Little does she realise that her playful protest is dangerous ... not only for herself, but also for her family. An unconventional, exciting and deeply human animated film for adults.

PERSEPOLIS tells one of the most moving stories of our time, full of hope, joie de vivre and passion.

Marjane Satrapi is the main character, director and illustrator of the comic of the same name. 'Marji' was born in Iran in 1969 and grew up there in the midst of the warlike revolt against the Shah, only to be replaced once again by fundamentalist tyranny. Satrapi traces her own story in childlike, dreamlike and black and white objective images as the history of Iran between political disillusionment and hopeful rebellion. When the local violence gets out of hand, Marji's parents send her to an international school in Vienna. The documentary coming-of-age story asks what revolution can mean in a global world and what role we can each play in it.
