Papillon
The film begins in the early 1930s with the deportation of around 100 prisoners from France to the penal colony of French Guiana. The prisoners are told that they no longer exist for France and can expect nothing more from France. After serving their prison sentences, they are to remain in exile in Guiana for the same length of time as colonists. Among the prisoners, who are marched under heavy guard through Marseille to the port, is Henri Charrière, nicknamed Papillon because of the butterfly tattooed on his chest, a symbol of freedom. Charrière was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a pimp, which he denies. Already during the crossing, Papillon has his first thoughts of escape and discusses them with other prisoners who already know Devil's Island. He befriends the somewhat eccentric Louis Dega, a counterfeiter who secretly carries large sums of money with him...
