Panny z Wilka
Depressed after the death of his friend, 40-year-old estate manager Wiktor returns to the place of his youth. Next door, five sisters he knows from the past are spending their summer. The apparent idyll of their days is permeated by a sadness that is intensified by Wiktor's return: he once loved one of the sisters, who has since also passed away... THE MAIDS OF WILKO marks a conscious shift in Wajda's work, who, after a series of politically charged works, now consistently turns his attention to the inner, private and timeless. This wistful, Chekhovian retrospective on a vanished Poland focuses on themes such as transience, guilt and memory: mature, contemplative cinema in which every gesture resonates.
