Alby Sherman has worked in his family's kosher deli all his life. But he has bigger ambitions, namely to cross the East River - ‘over the Brooklyn Bridge’ - and open a posh restaurant in Manhattan. But he doesn't have the money. When he asks his uncle Benjamin for an investment, he agrees - on the condition that Alby leaves his girlfriend Elizabeth and marries a Jewish girl ... YENTL meets PORTNOY'S COMPLAINT. A trashy film that is constantly in motion, between Brooklyn and Manhattan, the shaky camera conveys the feeling of a shabby, run-down New York of the 1980s.
