Otto Neurath – Der Rote Elefant
FILM & PANEL DISCUSSION “The Red Elephant – Otto Neurath and the Power of Visual Statistics” TUESDAY, 16 SEPTEMBER | 6:00–8:00 p.m. | Filmcasino
Panelists: Karl Sigmund, Gernot Waldner, Günther Sandner, Tina Frank, Klemens Himpele (subject to change)
In cooperation with the Society and Economy Museum, Filmcasino is showing Karl Sigmund's documentary film THE RED ELEPHANT about Otto Neurath. The film portrays Otto Neurath, Red Vienna, and the invention of pictorial statistics.
Otto Neurath and his team developed the Vienna method of pictorial statistics – also known as ISOTYPE – in Red Vienna. The aim was to make knowledge about society and economics accessible to everyone, regardless of language or level of education. The pictorial statistics developed by Neurath and his team are now considered a milestone in information transfer and have had a lasting impact on our visual communication culture. Following the film, experts will discuss how relevant Neurath's ideas still are today and what inspiration they can provide for our education system.
The event is part of the anniversary program of the Society and Economy Museum, which not only looks back on 100 years of educational work, but also looks boldly ahead to the future. Following the film, experts will discuss how Neurath's pictorial statistics are reflected in all areas of life today and how Otto Neurath would address the challenges of today's education system. Participants include: Karl Sigmund, Gernot Waldner, Günther Sandner, Tina Frank, Klemens Himpele (subject to change)
