MI 15 Jan: With an introduction by Gregor Holzinger (Mauthausen Memorial)
The Jewish translator Marta Weiss is interned in the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp. She is the only one of her family to survive because the Nazis still want to claim her services. In the camp, she joins a female resistance cell from various nations ... Director Wanda Jakubowska, herself a prisoner in Auschwitz, partly shoots on location and with survivors, which gives the film a particularly haunting and documentary character. The film is nothing less than the first harrowing and still valid major work to deal with the Holocaust. (Florian Widegger)
