The 1950s was a prosperous decade for Swedish experimental film, not least thanks to the Arbetsgruppen för film, a loose constellation of filmmakers and artists such as Mihail Livada, Peter Weiss and Eivor Burbeck. Björn Lüning's Study in Optical Rhythm is an exemplary work from this context and is shown here together with some of the productions of Svenska Filmligan, known for making the first double projection film in Sweden, and with formally rigorous films by Jan W. Morthenson, Anne Robertsson, Öyvind Fahlström and Olle Hedman, who combines abstract animation with works that play with the semantic distortions between word and image.
