FromAnabel Rodríguez Ríos

Year2020

Duration99min.

In the sinking village of Congo Mirador, near Venezuela’s Lake Maracaibo, a community struggles to survive as pollution and neglect take their toll. Amidst an election season, Tamara, a sharp-witted Chavista representative, campaigns fiercely, while opposition teacher Natalie battles for the chance to make a difference. Young Yoaini watches her world slowly disappear, her childhood marked by political tension and environmental decay. Once Upon a Time in Venezuela explores a community facing challenges from corruption and climate change, reflecting the broader issues affecting the nation.

Following the screening, a panel discussion will take place featuring film director Anabel Rodríguez Ríos and Members of the European Parliament Andreas Schieder and Lukas Mandl. The discussion will be moderated by Frank Piplat, Head of the European Parliament Liaison Office in Vienna, and is organized in cooperation with the European Parliament.

The Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, the EU's human rights award, has been presented by the European Parliament since 1988.
