Longshoreman Terry Malloy (Marlon Brando) was an aspiring boxer until powerful local mob boss Johnny Friendly (Lee J. Cobb) persuades him to take a fight. When a longshoreman is murdered before he can testify about Friendly's control of the Hoboken waterfront, Terry teams up with the dead man's sister, Edie (Eva Marie Saint), and the shrewd priest Father Barry (Karl Malden) to testify themselves against the advice of Friendly's lawyer, Terry's older brother Charley (Rod Steiger).

Leonard Bernstein's score for ON THE WATERFRONT premiered in New York City on July 28, 1954. His score was praised by critics and audiences alike, and ON THE WATERFRONT went on to win eight Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Marlon Brando), Best Supporting Actress (Eva Marie Saint) and Best Director (Elia Kazan).
