On the Road to Hollywood
On the trail of history, survival and cinema. A cinematic detective story that follows the paths of the directors, authors and actors who were driven into exile in 1933 and 1938 respectively.
On the Road to Hollywood is an attempt to document the ‘experience of exile’ in images and sounds - a cinematic investigation into German-language film emigration. Bernhard Frankfurter researched, visited and interviewed contemporary witnesses, expellees and perpetrators alike: in Vienna, London, Berlin, Prague, New York and - as extreme opposites - Theresienstadt and Hollywood.
‘It has become an angry, melancholy, serious and courageous piece of film,’ wrote the contemporary press about this pioneering work - ’and thus also a risky, vulnerable one.’
