New Mexico, USA, 1979. Fourteen-year-old Olmo is hopelessly in love — with his neighbor Nina. Together with his best friend Miguel, he tries everything to impress her. Nina, however, is more interested in the stereo system owned by Olmo’s immigrant family, which she desperately wants to borrow for her party. Olmo senses his big chance. But on the night of the party, he is supposed to take care of his sick father, who uses a wheelchair. With money tight, his mother has to unexpectedly cover a shift at work, and his sister Ana is determined to go to the roller disco with her friends. When the stereo system breaks down as well, Olmo’s party mission — despite perfectly rehearsed Saturday Night Fever dance moves — threatens to end in total disaster.

Mexican director Fernando Eimbcke’s heartwarming story thrives on its endearingly quirky characters, lovingly crafted details, and the comedy of everyday situations. With great sensitivity, Eimbcke skillfully balances teen comedy and social drama, ultimately allowing his young hero Olmo to discover what truly matters in life.

“A warmhearted and unsentimental portrait of teenage life.” (Toronto International Film Festival)
