Of Seals and Men + We Have Many Names
Of Seals and Men documents traditional seal hunting in Greenland on behalf of the Danish government: in a barren landscape of ice and snow, men kill seals to feed themselves, their families and their sled dogs. Largely free of government propaganda, Zetterling's film sparked controversy because it does not take a stand against seal hunting. In Vi har många namn, Mai Zetterling directs and plays the lead role of a self-sacrificing woman who suffers from her separation from her husband. When Zetterling's marriage to her co-writer David Hughes broke down, she began writing the screenplay for this film: ‘I used all the pain and misery of my failed marriage. It was bitter medicine.’ (T.W.)
