After separating from his wife and marrying his daughter, the ageing teacher and beekeeper Spyros sets off on one last journey. He leaves his dreams and his previous life behind - except for his bees, with which he sets off southwards. He meets up with old friends and picks up a young hitchhiker - an encounter that confronts him with his unlived life. With the second part of the ‘Trilogy of Silence’, Greek director Theo Angelopoulos achieves his greatest success with audiences: an intimate, brittle and beautiful road movie, in complex shots through bleak landscapes, accompanied by the elegiac funeral music of Eleni Karaindrou and Jan Garbarek, and Mastroianni in his most restrained and intense role.
