Nous (Wir)
For Alice Diop, "we" is not an abstract collective. "We" is a family on the prowl, the car mechanic from Mali who wants to return home after 20 years of precariousness, a royalist ceremony in memory of Louis XVI, the memorial site of the former Nazi internment camp in Drancy, a fine hunting party and her own family: Diop accompanies her sister, a geriatric nurse, at work, and her father and mother, immigrants from Senegal, also find their way into the film via home videos. She herself not only appears as a narrator, but can also be seen in conversation with a writer who reads from his diary, allowing Diop to reflect on her own actions. NOUS is an extraordinary documentary essay full of precise observations along the RER B rapid transit railway, which despite all the contrasts seeks to find common ground. Jean Ferrat's chanson "Ma France" plays during the closing credits.
