Nosferatu – Phantom der Nacht
Werner Herzog's NOSFERATU - PHANTOM OF THE NIGHT is an impressive reinterpretation of the 1922 silent film classic. Jonathan Harker travels to remote Transylvania to sell a property in Wismar to the mysterious Count Dracula. There he discovers that Dracula is a vampire who feeds on human blood, and he falls under his spell.
Attracted by a medallion belonging to Harker's wife Lucy, Dracula sets off on the long journey by ship to Wismar, where his obsession with Lucy grows ever stronger. Realising that she must sacrifice herself to defeat Dracula, Lucy's devotion succeeds in holding him until dawn and the first ray of light, which is fatal for him. But this is not the end of Herzog's tragic story, because Jonathan has now become a vampire himself...
Werner Herzog's NOSFERATU combines the motifs of decay, death and an unquenchable longing for life with a hypnotic, melancholy atmosphere in an exciting way. This is carried on the one hand by Klaus Kinski's incredibly intense performance and on the other by the stunning beauty of the landscape shots.
The combination of dark romance and existential themes is what makes the film so special. Dracula is not only shown as a monster, but also as a tragic figure who is broken by his own loneliness and the curse of immortality.
